Chapter nine

Something is different when we exit onto Hell’s streets. They are still a twisted, nightmarish landscape of unending torment, but the streets also seem to burn more hotly, forcing occupants to walk upon a surface that writhes and twists like a living thing as if we are in the belly of Satan himself. The air has also changed. It is thick with the stench of brimstone and burning flesh, and the sky above is a deep, burning crimson as if the heavens themselves were ablaze. Satan has turned up the torment, which is a message to me, I am sure. Though the streets of Hell have always been a never-ending, soul-crushing journey through a realm of unending despair, a new air of hopelessness blankets human suffering. Hell has never been so unmerciful.

“Are you okay?” Crystal asks as she hides beneath the cloak, bringing forth the image of Little Red Riding Hood on her way to be devoured by the wolf.

“I’m fine, Crystal. Keep your head down and keep moving.”

“You’re lying,” she says. They know me as well as I know them.

“Hell is getting worse. They know there’s a war coming.” I turn the stone in the amulet and become invisible. Crystal hides deeper beneath the hooded cloak. “Take the next street on the left. It will lead us from the Red Light District into the Business District.”

“How the hell did Hell get a Business District? What’s there to sell or trade.” Crystal turns to the next street. The streets are not as crowded, meaning she will stand out.

“Remove your hood, but make no eye contact,” I say, and she does. “Creatures in the Business District use humans as commodities, like soy and wheat crops in the Above World. Negotiations are done for the humans most suitable for Hell. You’ll see no bounty hunters in the Business District because they’re casing the Above World for those in the Business District.”

“Not every human is worth the same?” Crystal looks straight ahead when a creature in a business suit stops to stare at her. It licks its lips but continues when she doesn’t give it the time of day.

“No. A world leader is extra special—a leader who is causing war and strife. Bounty hunters latch onto these people and silently encourage their behavior.” I watch the next approaching creature, but it ignores Crystal. “The more chaos the leader causes, the better fit the leader is for Hell.”

Two blocks from the Archive building, I pull Crystal into an alley and a doorway. The two of us watch four slithers march by.

“Looking for us?” Crystal asks.

“There’s no fucking way we’re getting into that building like this.” I turn the stone and reappear.

“What’re you doing?”

“Thinking.”

“Mavka tricked us?”

“I can’t come up with a reason why she would.” I put an arm around Crystal and pull her against me. I turn the stone to the right, and we both disappear.

Crystal laughs. “She didn’t mention this.” Her hand brushes against my cock, and she whimpers. “It has been a while.
